Sollen sich die Alten doch das Maul zerreißen über ihre kurzen T-Shirts und die löchrigen Jeans. Lora liebt Todor, und Todor liebt sie. Das ist das Einzige, was zählt. Das Gerede der Leute und der Ärger zu Hause, weil sie zu spät heimkommt, sind ihr egal. Doch als ihr Vater plötzlich stirbt, ändert sich alles. Familie und Nachbarn lassen sich nicht mehr so leicht ignorieren. Denken sie wirklich, Gott habe sie mit dem Tod ihres Vaters bestrafen wollen? Sogar Todor geht ihr aus dem Weg. Auf einmal scheint es, als ob das Dorf und die ihr darin zugedachte Rolle immer erdrückender würden. Who cares if the old people moan about her short-cut T-shirts and ripped jeans? Lora loves Todor, and Todor loves her – that‘s the only thing that matters. She doesn‘t care about the gossip, or that she gets in trouble for coming home too late. But when her father suddenly dies, everything changes. It‘s no longer so easy to ignore her family and the neighbours. Do they really believe that her father‘s death is God‘s way of punishing her? And even Todor has started to avoid her. Life in the village and her role there seem to be more and more oppressive. Portraying the customs and traditions of a village set in the breathtaking landscape of rural Bulgaria, ZHALEIKA subtly tells the tale of a young woman‘s emancipation.
Eliza Petkova 1983 in Bulgarien geboren. Magister in Philosophie und Modernes Japan. Seit 2011 Studium in der Fachrichtung Regie an der Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie (dffb). 2015 wurde ihr Kurzfilm ABWESEND beim Festival de Cannes für die Cinéfondation nominiert.
Born in Bulgaria in 1983, she graduated with an MA in philosophy and modern Japanese. Since 2011, she has been studying directing at the German Film and Television Academy (dffb). Her short film ABWESEND was nominated for a Cinéfondation Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2015.
